Where you begin
The Final Chapter
This is where you begin. Before you build anything, decide what you are building towards. A business that serves you well and holds real value, whether you sell it, pass it on, or simply choose when to stop, starts with a clear picture of the end.

What is a KPI?

KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator. It is simply a number you track regularly that tells you whether your business is moving in the right direction.

The word sounds corporate, but the idea is straightforward. If you want to grow your revenue, you need to know how many enquiries you are getting each week. If you want to keep clients coming back, you need to know your retention rate. A KPI is just the number that tells you whether what you are doing is working.

Good KPIs are measurable, meaningful, and things you can actually influence. You do not need many — three to five is usually enough.
